Fields Wins Scholarship at SIU-C Accounting Challenge
February 17, 2010
On Friday, February 5, 2010, thirty of Ms. Hayes’ Accounting students competed for scholarships at the 12th Annual Accounting Challenge sponsored by the School of Accountancy at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The Accounting Challenge is designed to identify and reward top students and programs in Southern Illinois. The Challenge consisted of individual accounting exams for Accounting I and Advanced Accounting and a team activity in which problem-solving and communication skills were tested. Twenty-five Southern Illinois schools were represented with more than 300 students competing.
Blake Fields, MVTHS senior, placed second overall in the Advanced Accounting Individual Exam Competition earning a $250.00 SIU-C School of Accountancy scholarship.
The School of Accountancy in the SIUC College of Business and the Accounting Circle, the school’s alumni group, along with Caterpillar sponsored the event at the Student Recreation Center. Local merchants provided door prizes for the event and each participant got a commemorative T-shirt. SIU President Glenn Poshard welcomed the participants and visited with most of them individually. Participants enjoyed a pizza luncheon too. It was a fun-filled day and all of Ms. Hayes’ students represented Mt. Vernon High School proudly with great attitudes and competitive spirits.
