Where is the Attendance Office located?
The Attendance Office is located in the lobby of H Building (127H). H Building is located in the southwest corner of the main campus, bordered by Casey and South 8th Streets.

What does a student do if he/she is absent from school?
Parent/guardian verification of an absence shall be submitted to the Attendance Office prior to, or at the time of, a student's return to school. Any absence not verified within two school days of the student's return to school shall be classified as truancy.

If a student becomes ill, what should he/she do?
If a student should become ill while at school, he/she should ask the teacher for a pass to the Nurse's Office, room 126H, or send someone to the Attendance or Nurse's Office for help if he/she is too ill to go to the office. Any student who leaves campus during their lunch hour and becomes ill and then proceeds home must have a parent/guardian telephone the Attendance Office immediately upon the student's arrival home.

Where may a student sign out when leaving school?
All students must sign out in the Attendance or Nurse's Office and secure an off-campus pass before leaving school.

If a student must leave school early due to illness or an appointment, where can he/she be picked up?
Once a student has signed out of the Attendance or Nurse's Office and received an off-campus pass, a parent/guardian may pick the student up at the southwest doors of H Building.

Must a student get a pass to leave the classroom?
Students are not permitted to leave assigned classrooms without permission and a campus pass signed by the teacher in charge.

When should a student arrive at school in the morning?
Students will not be allowed in school buildings before 8:20 a.m. unless they have a note from a teacher. Prior to 8:20 a.m., students may enter Building H to acquire an absence excuse. Bus students and other early arrivals should go to the cafeteria, student lounge or library, which will open at 7:30 a.m.

What does a student do if he/she is tardy?
If a student is not in his/her assigned seat or location when the tardy bell rings he/she is tardy. Any student who is late should proceed to the scheduled class. The teacher shall determine the validity of the student’s reason for being late.

How do I know if school is closed due to inclement weather?
If it becomes necessary to close school due to inclement weather, WMIX will be notified. This station will be asked to announce this information periodically. We urge parent/guardian(s) and students to refrain from calling the school on stormy mornings as our telephone lines must remain free to contact the radio station and transportation people. REMEMBER: Unless an announcement regarding the closing of Mt. Vernon Township High School, District #201, is made over WMIX, school will be in session.

What are the attendance/discipline policies at Mt. Vernon Township High School?
Each student is given a copy of Mt. Vernon Township High School's Student and Parent Handbook the first day of school. Each student and their parent/guardian(s) is encouraged to examine and become familiar with the student attendance/discipline policy sections of the handbook. You are also encouraged to examine the “Attendance Practices/Procedures” brochure for specifics on day-to-day attendance matters.

What are student obligations concerning school property?
Students are expected to keep rooms, corridors, and grounds neat and clean, by using trash receptacles on campus, making the proper use of school property, and by encouraging others to be more thoughtful in this respect.

Is there a school dress code?
Yes. The following are considered to be against Mt. Vernon Township High School's dress code. Dress or appearance which presents a health or safety hazard and which materially and substantially disrupts the educational process; clothing that includes emblems or printing that is obscene, profane, libelous, slanderous, or that may incite students to disrupt the educational process; and clothing that depicts or promotes alcoholic beverages, tobacco, or tobacco products, or any illegal substances. No hats, caps, scarves, handkerchiefs, or plastic/nylon hair coverings may be worn in the classroom. Shoes must be worn by students at all times. No sunglasses or dark glasses, unless they are prescription glasses, may be worn in the classroom.

If a parent/guardian needs to drop an item off at Mt. Vernon Township High School that his/her child has forgotten, where should they go?
The item should be taken to the Attendance Office located in 127H. Parking is available in the visitor's parking lot west of "H" building.

Are students allowed to make phone calls?
Should a student need to make a personal call, they are encouraged to make the call on their time (before/after school, between classes and/or during their lunch period) at one of the pay phones on campus. In the event the reason necessitates use of a phone during class, students may be sent to Attendance Office with a pass to use the phone.

Where are school notices posted?
Notices of activities and other bulletins may be found on the bulletin boards. No notice should be posted until permission has been granted through the Attendance Office. Notices should be removed by those who put them up as soon as their purpose has been served.

Are students allowed to stay in buildings and corridors during lunch hours?
No. Students are not to stay in the buildings during lunch periods. However, students may stay in the cafeteria, student lounge or library.

If a student loses an article, what can he/she do to recover it?
Although the school will make an effort to recover lost property, it will assume no responsibility for the same. All students are furnished lockers with good locks and must assume full responsibility for their property. To protect their interests, students should use only the lockers assigned to them, should keep secret their lock combinations, should keep their lockers locked at all times, and immediately upon finding locks or lockers defective should report the same to the Main Office so repairs can be made or new lockers assigned.

Students should not bring valuables or excessive amounts of money to school. All articles found shall be turned in to the Attendance office. Valuable items such as purses, keys, or books which are lost should be reported to the Attendance Office. Articles may be claimed in the Attendance Office before and after school and during the lunch hours by properly describing or identifying them.

When is the bus route list available? What is the availability of buses?
The bus route list is available at registration. Students who reside 1.5 miles from school are provided free transportation to and from school. Buses will run the first day of school and all students planning to ride the bus, regardless of how often, should plan to ride the first day of school so that routes and pick-up/drop-off times may be established.

Who is allowed to drive to Mt. Vernon Township High School? How are student parking permits issued? What is the cost of a parking permit? Are the permits issued annually? Where should they be displayed?
All students are required to obtain a parking permit from the Attendance Office for any vehicles that will be operated or parked on campus. Students must pay $20.00 per year to the Bursar, possess receipt of payment, have no unpaid debt, complete a "Student Parking Permit Application" and return it to the Attendance Office. A student can purchase only one portable hangtag permit; however, up to three vehicles under the registrant's control may be registered. This permit may be transferred only between those registered vehicles. Students may not transfer their parking permit to other students. Only one of the registered vehicles may be parked on Mt. Vernon Township High School property at any time.

At the time of registration, the student must produce a valid driver’s license and documentary proof that each of the vehicles in question is registered and properly insured, and his or her valid Mt. Vernon Township High School identification card.

Student vehicles operated or parked on the campus at any time must display a valid Mt. Vernon Township High School registration hangtag. Permit numbers must be displayed right side up and be clearly visible to be honored (permit is not to be obscured by window tinting or sun shield). Vehicles parked on campus that do not bear a valid student parking permit, or are in the wrong parking space, may be towed at the owner's expense.

Where do I call to get answers to questions, discuss concerns, check progress, share information, etc. about my son/daughter?
Occasionally you may have a question about your son’s/daughter’s progress in school or about school in general. The phone numbers listed below and on the next panel will help you in contacting faculty and staff. Classroom teachers cannot usually be reached during the time that classes are in session. You are encouraged to call the and leave a voice message with your name, number, and message and the teacher will call you back at his/her earliest convenience. Administrators and counselors can usually be reached by phone during the school day. A secretary will take a message if the person is not available. Your call will be returned as soon as possible. If you would like a conference, an appointment is recommended.

What is ELO?
ELO (Extended Learning Opportunity) is a time when teachers are available to assist students each day. ELO times are as follows:

Mon—Wed 3:21—3:40
Thursday 2:55—3:40
Friday 3:15—3:40

• Students may use ELO time to:
• M ake up tests, quizzes, and assessments
• Get make-up work from absences
• Receive additional instruction
• Work on projects, do extra credit work, etc.
• Participate in academic and/or curricular enrichment activities
• Study independently or in groups
• Do homework
• Use the library and computer resources
• Meet with their guidance counselor

How would I go about leaving a message or arranging a conference with my son/daughter’s teacher?
Parent/Guardians who wish to communicate with a specific teacher may arrange a conference by calling that teacher directly. If unable to reach the teacher leave a voice message requesting a return call to arrange appropriate communication. Note--Teachers cannot be released from the classroom assignment to answer telephone calls. When a conference with a teacher is necessary, it is suggested you contact them directly. Leave a voice message if necessary.

How Can I Help Ensure Safety In My Child's School?
As a parent, make it your responsibility to become as active in your son/daughter’s school as your schedule permits. The more parents are involved and visible, the safer their children's schools will be.

Get to know your son/daughter’s friends and their families. Productive friendships and a sense of common purpose among students, teachers, and neighbors make schools and neighborhoods safer.
