Mt. Vernon Area Vocational Center is regarded as one of the best secondary vocational training facilities in Southern Illinois with a highly qualified staff dedicated to excellence in career and technical education. With five participating high schools throughout Jefferson and Wayne Counties representing nearly 300 high school junior and seniors.

Forty years ago when Mt. Vernon Area Vocational Center was established , the Center’s mission was to provide young men and women with job training to enter the workforce directly out of high school. Over the past 40 years, no one can deny that the world and the workplace have changed. Today’s student needs to graduate from high school, technical school or college with more than job skills. Students must have the ability to communicate, problem solve, adapt to change, and most importantly, continue to learn new skills throughout their working life.

It is the mission of Mt. Vernon Area Vocational Center to develop, through strong partnerships and curriculum, responsible and productive citizens who are prepared for lifelong learning. In addition, many of the programs qualify for college credit at no cost.
