On behalf of all of the individuals who make Mt. Vernon Township High School a great place to learn, please allow me to welcome you to our school. High school is an exciting time for both students and parents. Everyone at Mt. Vernon High School shares in your excitement as the school year rapidly approaches.
As students at Mt. Vernon, you will become part of a historic tradition of academic and extra-curricular excellence. You will help us expand upon our already strong traditions in academics, the arts, and athletics. As a Ram, you will become a valued member of our school community.
Of course, it is up to you, the student, to take advantage of the many opportunities Mt. Vernon High School has to offer. First and foremost, you have the responsibility to earn good grades in high school. Take your job as a student seriously. Expand your knowledge by taking courses that will introduce you to new concepts and ideas. Explore the many electives we offer in the art, music, foreign language, and vocational departments. Do not be afraid to ask your teachers for help - no one understands everything in school. Commit to being the best student you can be the next four years. At the same time, do not forget to have some fun in high school. Mt. Vernon High School offers students many, many opportunities to become involved in extra-curricular activities. I encourage you to participate in at least one this school year.
As parents, you also have a responsibility at the high school. It is up to you to encourage your student to make the grades. Check on his or her academic progress often. With online family access to grades, attendance and discipline, you can do this several times per day if you so choose. Talk to your student's teachers - every teacher has a telephone in the classroom and has access to email. Communicate with guidance counselors - they also want your child to succeed. Finally, get involved in the school. Show your child that you care about education by playing an active role in his or her future the next four years.
As a Mt. Vernon Ram, each and every one of us has the responsibility to make sure that our school is the best it can possibly be for every single student who enters the buildings. Students, parents, teachers, administrators, and board members - we are all in this together. As I look forward to the 2008-2009 school year and the incoming group of ninth grade students, I cannot wait to experience with them the ups and downs the next four years will bring. Together, we can make sure the downs are not insurmountable, but merely bumps along the path to the ultimate goal- graduation with the Class of 20l2.
Once again, welcome to Mt. Vernon Township High School- it's a great place to learn!
Sincerely,
Melanie Gulley
Guidance Director
