On Saturday January 11th, 2014, the Mt. Vernon Chess Team competed in the Gateway Class Tournament in Festus, MO. We came away with the 2nd place team trophy and 4 individual trophies (Jesse McPherson, David Wininger, Liam Hensley, and Thierry Papazian).  “I was very proud of the team and their efforts” said Coach England. “Our team has improved a lot over the years and we are hoping to place better than we ever have before at the State Tournament in February in Peoria.

Leading the team in wins was Jesse McPherson with 4 wins, close behind was David Wininger with 3, Liam Hensley with 3 and Conner Buretz with 2.5 wins. This was a meet by class (rating). In other words you played with people who were rated in the same class as you. There were four classes: 1000 and above, 800 to 999, 600 to 799, and below 600.  It made for a very good meet and many of our games took 1  ½  - 2 hours.

I know that may sound boring to some but until you’ve been to a meet and feel the tension you’ll never really understand how exciting it can be.  Our next meet is a home meet with Webber on Wednesday, January 22nd at Mt. Vernon.
