Flag Poles, Rifles, and Ribbons, Oh My!

May 14, 2009

by Tasha Southers

Summer is coming up, and for seniors it is already here. For most that would mean swimming, sand, and sun, but there are few who think of flags, rifles, and that song you will never be able to forget.

Yes, I'm talking about flag/rifle twirling. After three amazing years on the drill team, twirling flags is one thing I look forward to now that the weather is nice. Unfortunately, this past year was my last, but it is something that I will always cherish and remember fondly.

If anyone were to ask me for drill team tips there are two main points that I would make:

1. It takes determination: I have yet to see ANYONE pick up a flag and right-off-the-bat be able to throw a helicopter. This is something that takes time to practice, and it is the determined that succeed on the drill team.

2. Your going to get hit: wether it's because you threw up the flag and couldn't catch it, or someone across the room lost control of their flag, it's inevitable. There has not been a single person on the drill team that hasn't been hit by a flag, but don't let that keep you from it. It's well worth the risk, as minimal as it is.

For those who are interested, try outs are coming up very soon. Flyers are posted around school and it will be on the announcements. Also, congratulations to the new color guard captain, Crystal Westbrook!
