Congratulations to Mt. Vernon Township High School agriculture teacher John Kabat who has received the National Agriculture Service Citation Award.
Only six people in the nation are selected for the honor each year. The award recognizes Kabat for his work as a teacher and FFA advisor, as well as his community service and commitment to agriculture.
"It's an award I never dreamed I could ever get," Kabat said. He later added, "It's just basically being active in the community and really it's local, state and national level, just trying to keep people aware of the things going on in agriculture to benefit the consumer and the producer so there's a communication between the two." Kabat traveled to New Orleans, La., this week with his family to accept the award at a conference for the National Association of Agriculture Educators.
He was encouraged to apply for the award by MVTHS Ag teacher Cherie Rogier. Kabat's application, which listed his accomplishments 'in the agriculture field, was judged in state and regional competitions before he was selected as one of this year's winners.
The winners can be from a wide range of agricultural backgrounds, Rogier said. "They can come from high school, they can come from community college, university, they can just come from the ag industry," Rogier said.
Kabat has taught at MVTHS since 1985 in various ag-related subjects as well as cooperative education. "Really, my whole teaching career has pretty well been at Mt. Vernon High School," Kabat said. "And if you know me, I'm pretty loyal to whatever I do."
Through it all, Kabat said he has tried to keep a positive attitude no matter what life throws his way. "That's the way life is, you've got your ups and downs," Kabat said. "I think a lot of the success I've had is just by having a very positive attitude toward everything."
MVTHS Principal Rowdy Fatheree recognized Kabat's accomplishment during Monday night's school board meeting. "I'm very proud of him," Fatheree said.
