Starch Madness 2026 graphic

Let's start with this: MVTHS Teacher Rebekah Rock cooked up this contest for her students, "Starch Madness".

"Starch Madness is a take on "March Madness" that occurs during our nutrition unit that includes learning about carbohydrates," Ms. Rock said. "Students learn the difference between simple and complex carbohydrates and identify what foods are examples of each. They learn that starches in food are carbohydrates that can be found in bread, pasta, potatoes, wheat etc."

That's the science that gets slipped in. The fun is that the students cook up the brackets (some of it, literally) and the whole school gets to vote. The last bracket looked like this:

Maybe no one remembers them after they are eaten, but the science will stick. Way to go, Rams!
